Renting a car in Morocco for the first time can feel overwhelming — unfamiliar rules, a different language, and a road culture that takes some getting used to. But with the right preparation, it’s one of the best ways to experience the country. Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Book in Advance — Especially in Peak Season

Morocco sees peak tourist demand during:

• Spring (March–May): best weather, popular for road trips.
• Summer (July–August): heavy demand, especially in coastal cities.
• November (Marrakech Marathon period).

Booking at least 2 weeks in advance during these periods can save you 20–30% compared to last-minute rates.

Always Take Full Insurance

For a first-time renter, we strongly recommend paying for zero-excess coverage (Super CDW). Here’s why:

• Moroccan roads can be narrow and unpredictable, especially in medinas and mountain passes.
• Animals (donkeys, sheep, camels near Merzouga) sometimes wander onto roads.
• Even a minor scratch can result in a large charge if you only have basic CDW.

Inspect the Car Thoroughly at Pickup

This is the single most important thing first-time renters overlook. Before accepting the car:

• Walk around the entire vehicle and photograph every scratch, dent, or scuff mark.
• Check the windscreen for chips.
• Test all lights, windows, and the air conditioning.
• Confirm the spare tire is present and inflated.
• Get the agent to initial next to each noted damage on the contract.

If there’s no condition report…

Walk away. A legitimate agency always provides a written condition report. An agency that refuses to document the car’s condition at pickup is likely planning to charge you for damage you didn’t cause.

Understand the Fuel Policy

There are two common policies in Morocco:

• Full-to-Full: You receive the car with a full tank and return it full. This is the fairest policy.
• Full-to-Empty: You pay for a full tank upfront and return it empty. You often pay a premium for this.

Always clarify the policy before signing, and confirm the fuel gauge reading on the contract.

Get a Data SIM for Navigation

Google Maps works well in Morocco but requires a data connection. Options:

• Buy a Maroc Telecom or Inwi SIM at the airport (approx. 50–100 MAD for 10GB).
• Download offline maps in Google Maps or Maps.me before arrival.
• Rent a portable WiFi device from your rental agency.
